Smoke is the problem

Smoke is the great danger for cats in a house fire. Many pets die in house fires without being burnt at all. Just like humans, smoke inhalation is the cause of many deaths. This Video of a fire rescue shows the lifeless form of a kitty rescued from a burning home. Thankfully the oxygen administered by the rescue team saved this kittens life. Another job well done boys.

When we had a fire in a neighbors apartment that had smoke going into ours after wrangling our cats into a carrier I placed a blanket over it to lessen inhalation. The fire department was already there, not sirens and they never checked to see if others were there. When I got out they just screamed at us to get out of the way. Glad to see a decent fire department in action
