Kitten rescued from child

While some will say the child was not hurting the kitty you can’t deny that the chances for a accident are quite high with a child that age. Watch and see what you think. Here’s what another viewer thought:

This makes me want to PUKE. SHAME SHAME SHAME on that man for allowing that kitten to cry so pitifully and not do anything. A toddler has NO BUSINESS holding a kitten. To clumsy and not enough control over their gross and fine motor skills. Not to mention screaming in the kitten’s ear. The whole thing is disgusting. That poor mommy cat. SHAME on that man for not taking care of and protecting that baby kitten and her mommy!

Mary Barth The cat could have easily hurt the baby, but the toddler could have easily hurt the cats baby too. Parents need to teach their children about respecting pets or any animal but pets especially if those pets have babies! If the parent isnt going to assume that responsibility then if the child got hurt, maybe she will learn not to mess with the kittens then!

While I don’t believe young children should handle kittens, I also don’t think the parents are wrong. I think the kitten was in distress from being held in such a way that could have been dangerous and it sensed that. Mama cat sensed it too, and saved her baby. I think if a small human child wants to hold a kitten or equally small animal, it should be calmly seated with said animal on their lap with parental supervision.

The child was being supervised and from what I could see, the toddler was not grabbing or actually holding the kitten very hard or momma would not have been able to get the kit – the kitten was meowing for effect rather than pain – and a happy ending. People are way too sensitive.

That is silly – how else do they learn – the whole history of our cultures and every culture would have children handling animals from a very young age – milking cows – brining up orphaned lambs. That child knew the boundaries – she didn’t fight with the momma cat – she didn’t chase it as it was taking it’s kitten away – she just went to the adult and cried – as the kit had done – and the adult comforted her – can’t see anything wrong with what happened in that video at all.

This kid looks like she’s not even a year old. What if she squeezed too hard? Tripped and squashed the kitten? Suddenly threw it? She’s a baby. She has no concept on right or wrong and should not be allowed to hold a kitten; especially a kitten of an age that is too small to fight back. We’re not being ‘too sensitive’. We have common sense.

I’m sorry – but you are being way too critical here – that toddler had been trained well – we can see by her reluctance to hit out – as the momma cat takes the kitten – the child is unhappy – but she stands back – and when the cat moves to the ‘nest’, the child does want to stop it – but she has been told before she cannot do that – the child has seen those kittens born – has been told not to chase, not to grab – and is watched the whole time. In fact, she has probably been given that kitten to hold ‘nicely’ and everything about this scenario is about respect and comfort – two babies being cared for by a parent – the momma cat taking her kitten back home and the human parent comforting the child who wants more interaction but is denied. There was no grabbing, hitting, chasing or hurt. The kitten looks about four weeks old – and will soon be doin’ it’s own thing – it is not ‘helpless’ and the way the momma cat drags it back home look more rough than anything the child was doing.

Supervising is not about standing over someone – the parent was sitting on the edge of the seat ready to intervene if the situation had needed it – that is why I know I’m not being ridiculous. I stand by my observations – that the parents of that toddler were in control of the situation.

      The kitten was not harmed.
I’ve done this with own children, now grown who now have cats of their own. My parents did it with me.
I now have four cats various ages, all healthy, happy and vetted. We have three cat trees instead of furniture.
They did see kittens born for strays we took in and handled them.
Roshan may not have been there, but I can tell you from my own experience , she’s right.
And toddlers, yes, are unpredictable sometimes, but usually, if you know your child, you could see it coming. This was an obviously loving dad.
The ones you have to worry about are the ones who don’t love or watch or teach their children respect for animals.

That kitten was screaming for help because it could sense danger, not comfort. That kid was not being “supervised” either… that kid was being filmed, there’s a difference. And as for your “happy ending”… I wonder how many “unhappy endings” we’re not privvy to and that aren’t being filmed and shared. I read the comments before I watched the video and thought “Oh no, this is going to be bad” but after I watched the video now all I can think is what kind of fucking rock do you people live under? “Shame on that man” blah blah blah, and J. Martin?, seriously bro/broette, I know it may be difficult for your closed mind to comprehend and all, but as a parent who’s had cats, dogs and a whole assortment of furry critters – Children pick things up. The coddle them and hold them and love them. I half expected the video to be of some kid strangling the stupid cat and the parents sitting there and laughing. Instead it was of a little girl holding her kitten and being upset about momma cat staking it back. So shame on you J. Martin for your awful comment; “The parents don’t deserve to have kids”. But congratulations, you managed to dish out the most heaping amount of bullshit I’ve heard in a long time. YOU, my friend, are the one who does not deserve to have kids with your ridiculous mindset, and with that said, if you do, however, have kids, please send them my condolences. It’s a shame they’ll be reared under that same rock.

I’ve had kittens and kids. Neither were harmed as I don’t feel these were. They obviously gave mama and kittens an enclosed place and the toddler was watched while handling the kitten.
Lighten up. The toddler didn’t throw the kitten.

The best cats I’ve seen are those that have been raised with children dragging them around, stuffing them in their dolly carriages, dressing them up, etc.. Without children you get a cat who if he were big enough he’d kill you. With the help of children you get a cat who is sweet and submissive. This is NOT equally true with a dog however. Oh, and by the way, you can save your ranting, I know that there will be those who rabbidly disagree, and you’e entitled to your opinion, I just have no intention of reading it. Just so you know.

For those who are acting so nonchalant about this toddler, keep in mind they’re called toddlers because they “toddle” which means unsteady walking. Just because the toddler wasn’t “hurting” the kitten at the moment, all it takes is a split second for a serious accident to happen. The kid almost fell backward from the weight of Mama Cat. And no, the kid wasn’t holding the kitten correctly… for the most part, the kitten was hanging on with its own claws, it didn’t feel secure and was frightened. That toddler was so upset that it looked like it would have hit or grabbed Mama Cat if its motor skills were better. I see all kinds of sharp edges behind that kid’s head if it had have fallen backwards. Bad bad judgment on the parent’s part… especially the coddling at the end, encouraging tantrum behavior because the kid wasn’t getting its way. This video was extremely uncomfortable to watch. One can never be “too sensitive” when it comes to the safety and well-being of human or pet babies! The only one thinking with a level head in that room was Mama Cat.

I agree a child that age should not be allowed to hold a kitten on her own, but it looks like she was holding the kitten very gently. The kitty was crying for mommy but didnt seem to be hurting. Mommy was naturally nervous and got the kitten. The father should have been more concerned about mommy cats feelings, but it doesnt seem the child was hurting the kitten at all.

Okay! I am a totally freaking cat lover! Yes a toddler should not be holding a kitten,BUT she was not hurting the kitten. She was not holding the kittens feet which is why the kitten is crying. If the toddler was hurting the kitten the mama cat would be very angry, She just took her baby to her nest. She will probably move all the kittens to where the toddler will not pick her up. I have been with cats, kittens and kids for over 40 years. Not smart but not dangerous. If the little girl was really mad,she could have hit the mama cat. She didn’t,she just cried and went to her father. Like I said ,not smart move but not dangerous!!

He would have been a better parent to explain to the child why it is not okay to take a kitten away from mommy and also show this young child how to hold and support the kitten. Instead he stood by laughing. Now tell me if this was a puppy and the mommy dog hurt the child as it took its puppy back or worse attacked this child because she thought the puppy was being hurt, what would the parent have done than? laugh? Its the job of the parent to teach their children what is correct and okay to do

Melanie Davis Ryan I also have worked for many rescue groups and also foster for them, and we DO carefully screen our adoptive homes and encourage them to adopt an older cat if they have children under 6. Once we explain our concerns they usually agree and admit they can’t be supervising their little ones every minute. Children who grow up with pets are more socially adaptable and empathetic than those who don’t and wherever possible should have pets. However they should be age appropriate as the reality is that even the most vigilant parents can’t be within arms reach at all times. In this particular instance, yes, the father is right there, however the child’s determination to handle the kitten should be a concern.

Ok. it’s settled. No one who has a baby… or ever plans to have children… should have a pet. And if they make the error of having a baby while a pet exists in the house, they should rehome the child (because we all know rehoming the pet would cause everyone here to criticize that irresponsibility as well).

Maybe these parents should just wrap both the kitten and the kid in bubble wrap and call it a good, safe day.

Or, perhaps those of you assuming that this child and her parents are irresponsible monsters should step off the imagined animal abuse bandwagon here and realize that children are going to want to touch, hold, pet and play with the pets they live with… and perhaps the responsible thing to do is to allow your child – from the moment they’re able to chase animals on their own two underseveloped motorskilled feet – exposure to the animals and teach them from an early age how to be gentle with them. As this kid obviously was in this clip. Yes, the kitten was crying… it’s what babies do. And yes, the mother gently came to its rescue… it’s what mothers do. But would it really be better to play keep away, potentially making young children see animals as something to fear contact with and avoid in lieu of teaching them very young (when it’s most needed) how to respect a living creature with gentle interaction? And teaching an animal not to fear in return? What is the imagined egregious level of danger here everyone else here seems to see that I don’t? She’d drop the kitten from a foot off the ground? Squeeze it so hard that it would crush in the split second it would take the father to step in? Get attacked by the mother cat? In light of animals being unpredictable, we all saw it didn’t happen in this case… these people clearly know how both the mother cat and the child were going to react because they wanted to film it.

Would you criticize yourselves as irresponsible monsters torturing a poor, defenseless animal if you were to pick up this cute little kitten and it started crying… which it would?

I worked in humane law enforcement for years. Trust me. This is far from irresponsible behavior, let alone the near abuse level everyone here ascribes to it. I appreciate anyone with a passion for animals and the treatment they deserve… but please stop criminalizing people (and so openly) who don’t deserve it and spend your time, energy and ire lashing out at dog fighters, zoos, mills… and your neighbor who leaves their barking dog chained up 24/7.

The parent was right there to make sure the child didn’t hurt the kitten. The mother cat genly took the kitten from the child. The only thing I would have said is that the man should have told the child that the kitten was drying for its mamma, and to let it go to its momma. I’ve seen children being mean and violent to animals, and this was not the case.

Dad’s don’t do this though do they – unless imminent danger – they allow us to learn by doing – it’s mum’s that stop us from getting hurt – dad’s push the boundaries so we grow.

Bad toddler parents…. Please respect animals ,they are NOT toys … You need to teach children how to respect and treat animals, and that any mother would be agitated and protective of a baby that is crying and distressed. Human or Animal ….

I was very impressed with the child and the mother cat. The child clearly didn’t want to give up the baby but didn’t try to get into a tug of war March but gently let the kitten go. Momma cat was very gentle in getting her baby back and did not seem in distress about it.

What the hell were her parents thinking not taking the kitten away from her when clearly it was scared and wanted it’s mother. They are lucky the momma cat wasn’t more agressive in getting her baby out of harms way.

I’m glad that momma cat was able to retrieve her kitten and bring it back to safety. I don’t think a child that young should be handling a kitten or any other fragile animal at all.

There was nothing wrong with what was going on in this video. The child was not squeezing the kitten. It was crying because it’s young and wanted his momma. And for all you know, the child’s parents were teaching her how to handle a kitten in this video but were interrupted by the kitten’s mother.

I hate parents who let their child do as they please with animals. That mam cat knew her baby was distressed and tha father instead of filming and laughing should have intervened long before the mama cat had to fetch her baby. Had that cat scratched the toddler she would have paid the the price

i remember when i was really really young and i was petting a cat too roughly. i wasn’t abusing it i was just petting too hard. my father smacked my hand off the cat and showed me how to softly pet the cat. he also explained to me that you pet a cat like you would a baby. from that day on i knew how to pet a cat and i am well on my way to being a crazy cat lady. woohoo! i don’t understand why parents don’t monitor their children around pets and teach them to appropriately show their affections for them! ugh

Im sorry but i fail to see what everyone is getting so upset about. The child wasnt holding the kitten to hard or squeezing it. Kittens do cry a lot. And a mother cat will always respond to her young. But i do agree that the toddler is a bit young to handle such a little kitten.

I agree that children need to learn about handling animals, however whether or not the kitten was hurt or not the mother cat was distressed enough to physically remove the kitten and remove it to safety. Kittens puppies etc are not a training aid for parents to use I speak as a parent and an animal owner.
